Crowd Modelling + Crowd Monitoring + Crowd Management = Safer Crowds
Crowd Modelling is the scientific approach to the development of safe, robust, crowd management plans. This can be achieved without the need for expensive, complex, time consuming computer simulations. In simple terms Crowd Modelling is understanding how, where, when and why crowds arrive, move around and leave an events/venues. The majority of this can be accomplished using tried, tested and simple to apply methodologies.
You cannot develop a safe, robust crowd management plan without some form of crowd modelling. Equally you cannot keep a crowd safe without some form of crowd monitoring (monitoring the arrival flow rates, how the queues build up, areas of high crowd density and different types of crowd behaviour, both normal and emergency). Crowd modelling and crowd monitoring are both essential to the development of a safe, robust crowd management plan.
Information + Education + Application = Safer Crowds

Prof. Dr. G. Keith Still FIMA is the G4S Professor of Crowd Dynamics at Bucks New University (UK) and has been consulting on major events around the world for over twenty years. He teaches a wide range of courses designed for event professionals (police, security, promoters, licensing authorities, etc.) at the UK Cabinet Office Emergency Planning College, Bucks New University and at client sites around the world.
"These courses were invaluable enabling me to illustrate quickly and precisely any issues that arose at the venues we attended and pass on my recommendations to the security team in a manner the was easily understood."
Dave Wilkie, Event Safety Officer, U2 360 European Tour
“As a silver/bronze commander in charge of major events in both a large busy city and a football stadium, I feel confident that I can now plan and prepare to ensure a safer ingress, circulation and egress of crowds. Thanks for this course.”
UK Police Commander
Prof. Still's educational programmes focus on how to develop robust crowd management plans through the application of Crowd Modelling. He does this by teaching delegates how to develop crowd and event models, teaching and training operators how to apply those models to major events and deploying monitoring tools and systems to assist in real-time decision support. His courses have been running for over 12 years at the UK Cabinet Office Emergency Planning College.
Topics include how to avoid overcrowding in public space, how to avoid accidents and incidents, the fundamental causes and prevention of crowd related disasters, how to develop robust crowd management plans and the uses and applications of real-time decision support tools/methodologies to anticipate crowd risks. You will find details of the workshops, courses, eLearning and support services on this website. We have details of international crowd disasters, crowd crazing and crowd risks on this site.
